What they were saying:

Quotes:

"Electronica is alive and well in the heart of this machine" - Ryan Cunningham RECOIL Magazine

Article:

The Current Magazine

1.Some enter solo. Some enter in bands.
a. Instantly every seat in the vast
Stadium is filled with musicians
holding their instrument.
i. You see Mozart has
taken a seat beside
prince.
ii. Mama Cass doesn't
notice as she sits on half
of L.L.
b. How long is your list of favorites?
And how long is a list of each of
your favorites' favorites?
i. Well here they are
gathered, every musical
artist in recorded history,
seated in countless tiers
encircling you.
ii. You've memorized the
seating chart-
1. that's taken a
lifetime.
II. You have every instrument and the
capability to manipulate each's sound.
a. You are the conducting master of
the ceremony.
b. The ceremony is life.
c. You will be conducting the
soundtrack.
III. Meet Jason Ash,
a. local electronic DJ who, like all
electronic DJs, have the whole
library of recorded history to work
with.
b. He wears black from hair to boot
and though his thoughts are not
dark you find yourself speaking
with him from within a shadow
where integrity and thoughtfulness
provide the only light.
c. He makes cash as a barista and a
life as an graphic artist, DJ and
musician
i. ::Assemble the Ash::
1. That is about
taking what
remains and
creating anew.
Iv. Ash's music has developed over the years.
a. He's lost his finger calluses, he's
moved on from heavy industrial
electronic music...
b. lately he's been discovering his
own electronic soundtrack scores.
i. The music is literary in
1. that it reveals
the author's
character and
2. the way it
draws the
audience into
interpretation
mode.
a. You're
not
interpr
eting
the
music-
you're
interpr
eting
the
effect
of the
music
on
you.
c. For Ash, the score's creation is a
revealing process
i. By adding bits of sound,
touches of distortion,
layers of beats and
instrumentation
ii.he seeks the sound that
appropriatly expresses
his present tense
emotion.
V. Ash was first introduced to electronic
music while working at the late Liquid
Room.
a. He descended to Chicago where
he popped his cherry and
i. further to (post-Katrina)
New Orleans where he
busted his chops as a DJ.
b. A sickness in the family brought
him back to the area and a regular
DJ gig
i. at Mulligan's Other Side
(::STATICK::)7/31/has
given him a reason to
stick.
c. Since being back here he's
uncovered a number of electronic
musicians
i. hard at work in the
"garage"-
1.that've yet to
bust their
cherry
2.or chops.
d. Grand Rapids is a good place, he
says, to get a start.
i. Mostly your friends will
show up and be
supportive regardless.
ii.Critics are rare here-1. you take this to
Chicago for
your first time
you're gonna
get thrown
down.
VI. Music fans eagerly adopted the iPod-
the cult of iPod probably drew a few new
listeners into the role of music fans.
a. Headpones are the badge of a
new democratic anarcho-
totalitarian fascist group.
i. At least as regards the
realm of sound-
1. we are able to
make choices,
2. any choice and
we expect to
3. have total
control of our
choice, and
4. if we've got the
scroll wheel
a. we are
in
control.
ii.If a broadcasting station
pirated its way into our
iPod and commandeered
our ability to make these
free chices-
1. we'd freak
a.raise
an
uproar.

b.speeches.
c.politics,

d.a riot
would
ensue.
i. wherein the audience is regarded as a respectable
participant and
ii.not essentially relegated to a secondary role.
iii. It's become simple to
create the soundtrack of
our lives.
VII. Ash's music intentionally lends the
listener's thoughts a Star role.
a. This kind of musical experience is
the exact opposite of for example
Bob Dylan-
i. whose music "spoke for
a generation"
ii.whose lyrics we lean into
hearing.
b. Ash's music flows in the vein of
IDM (intelligent dance music)
